Chicken coops under $500, and how many hens they really fit

By the Fluff & Feed team

Hens gathered inside a wooden coop

Coops priced at $500 or less when we checked, with the maker's flock claim next to what the floor space supports.

How we count birds

We divide the listed coop floor by 4 sq ft per bird, and the run by 10 sq ft per bird, and show the smaller number. Bantams need less, while large breeds and birds that rarely free-range need more. When a maker doesn't list floor area, we can't check the claim.

Most prefab coop listings don't say what kind of wire they use. If a page doesn't say hardware cloth, plan on adding it yourself before raccoon season.
