How to keep chicken water from freezing

Chicks gathered around a waterer

The easiest fix is a heated waterer or a heated base under a metal fount, plugged into a GFCI outlet. Choose one rated at least 10 degrees colder than your usual low. No power? Rotate two waterers morning and evening.

If you only buy one piece of winter gear, make it this. A hen is mostly water and an egg is three-quarters water, so a flock that can't drink stops laying fast. Breaking ice twice a day works until the first week of single digits.

Your three options

TypeWhat it isGood for
Heated baseA warming plate that sits under a metal fount you already ownKeepers with a galvanized fount. Usually rated to about 10°F
Heated watererAn all-in-one plastic or metal fount with the heater built inThe simplest choice; ratings run from 0°F to -5°F on the ones we list
Heated nipple watererA bucket or tank with drinking nipples and a built-in heaterCleaner water and the coldest ratings, down to -20°F

Check the cold rating, not the box photo

Many heated waterers don't state how cold they're rated for at all. A thermostat that "turns on at 35°F" is not a rating. It only tells you when the heater starts. Of the 12 waterers and bases we compare, 4 don't give a low-temperature number. The ones that do range from 10°F for most heated bases down to -20°F for the Premier1 heated nipple waterer.

Pick a rating at least 10 degrees colder than your usual winter low. See waterers rated to -10°F or colder.

Power and safety

No power at the coop?

Swap two plain waterers morning and evening, keeping one inside to thaw. Black rubber pans in full sun stay open a few hours longer. We haven't found a solar-heated waterer with a stated cold rating yet. If one comes out, we'll add it.

Questions people ask

Will a heated waterer work at -20°F?

Only if it's rated for it. Among the ones we compare, only the Premier1 heated nipple waterer is rated to -20°F. Most heated bases stop at about 10°F.

Can I put a plastic waterer on a heated base?

Check the base first. Many are made for metal founts only and can melt plastic.
