Most prefab coops hold about a third to half the hens printed on the box. We divide each coop's listed floor by 4 sq ft per hen and its run by 10 sq ft per hen, then show you the smaller number next to the maker's claim.
How we count birds
We divide the listed coop floor by 4 sq ft per bird, and the run by 10 sq ft per bird, and show the smaller number. Bantams need less, while large breeds and birds that rarely free-range need more. When a maker doesn't list floor area, we can't check the claim.
Most prefab coop listings don't say what kind of wire they use. If a page doesn't say hardware cloth, plan on adding it yourself before raccoon season.

Buying through our links may earn us a commission at no cost to you. It never changes which products match. How we earn money
Plan on 4 sq ft of coop floor per standard hen and 10 sq ft of run. A 4 by 6 ft coop (24 sq ft) fits 6 hens. Bantams need about half that, and large breeds need about double. Use the space calculator.
Why do makers say a coop fits more birds than it does?
Many count how many hens can squeeze onto the roost at night, or quote bantam numbers. That's not enough room for birds that spend winter days inside.
What if a coop doesn't list its floor area?
We show "Not listed" and don't guess. Ask the seller for the inside dimensions, multiply them, and divide by 4.
