How much space do chickens need?
Plan on 4 sq ft of coop floor and 10 sq ft of run per standard hen, about 9 to 10 inches of roost bar each, and 1 nest box for every 4 or 5 hens. Bantams need about half that, and large breeds need about double.
Most keepers and extension services go by these numbers, and we check every coop against them.
| Space | Per standard hen | For 6 hens |
|---|---|---|
| Inside the coop | 4 sq ft | 24 sq ft |
| Outdoor run | 10 sq ft | 60 sq ft |
| Roost bar | 9 to 10 in | 4.5 to 5 ft |
| Nest boxes | 1 per 4 to 5 hens | 2 |
Work it out for your flock
Why 4 square feet?
It's the figure you'll see from most university extension services and long-time keepers. Below that, hens start pecking at each other, the bedding gets wet faster and ammonia builds up overnight. Four square feet assumes your birds are outside most of the day. If snow keeps them in for weeks at a time, give them more, closer to 6 or 8.
The run number matters just as much. A 10 sq ft patch per bird gives hens room to scratch, dust bathe and get away from whoever is at the top of the pecking order that week.
What the boxes say
This is where it goes wrong for a lot of people. Coop listings tend to count birds the way you'd count them on a roost at night, shoulder to shoulder. When we checked 16 coops against their own measurements, only 2 had the floor space for 6 hens. One popular coop sold as fitting 12 lists a 4.4 sq ft henhouse. That's enough for one hen.
So before you buy, find the inside floor dimensions, multiply them, and divide by 4. If the listing doesn't give you the dimensions, that tells you something too. Our coop list does the math for you.
Bantams and big breeds
Bantams need about half the space of a standard hen, which is why makers love to quote bantam numbers. Brahmas, Cochins and Jersey Giants need more: plan on 8 sq ft inside and a pop door at least 13 inches tall. Mixed flock? Count each big girl as two.
Questions people ask
How much space do 6 chickens need?
About 24 sq ft inside the coop and 60 sq ft of run, with 4 to 5 ft of roost bar and 2 nest boxes.
How much space do 10 chickens need?
About 40 sq ft inside, such as a 5 by 8 ft coop, and 100 sq ft of run. That usually means a walk-in coop.
Can chickens free range instead of having a run?
Free-ranging birds can get by with less run, but they still need the full 4 sq ft each inside for bad-weather days and nights.
