Brown hens eating from a feeder on a sunny day

A laying hen eats about a quarter pound of feed a day, per University of Kentucky Extension, so 6 hens go through about 1.5 lb a day. A 20 lb feeder lasts them about 13 days. Treadle feeders stay closed until a hen steps on them.

How we count days of feed

We divide what the maker says the feeder holds by 1.5 lb, what 6 laying hens eat in a day at a quarter pound each (University of Kentucky Extension). NC State Extension puts it a little higher, about a third of a pound a day while laying, so treat the number as a best case.

"Keeps out rodents" is shown only when the maker says so. We haven't tested any feeder ourselves.
