Coops that really fit 6 hens

By the Fluff & Feed team · Updated

Hens gathered inside a wooden coop

Only 2 of the 16 coops we checked have the floor space for 6 standard hens: the Carolina Coops American (24 sq ft henhouse) and the Producer's Pride Citadel (37 sq ft). Six hens need about 24 sq ft inside and 60 sq ft of run.

How we count birds

We divide the listed coop floor by 4 sq ft per bird, and the run by 10 sq ft per bird, and show the smaller number. Bantams need less, while large breeds and birds that rarely free-range need more. When a maker doesn't list floor area, we can't check the claim.

Most prefab coop listings don't say what kind of wire they use. If a page doesn't say hardware cloth, plan on adding it yourself before raccoon season.

Questions people ask

How big should a coop be for 6 chickens?

About 24 sq ft of floor inside, like a 4 by 6 ft henhouse, plus a 60 sq ft run. Add a 4 to 5 ft roost bar and 2 nest boxes.

Are coops sold as "6 to 8 chickens" big enough?

Usually not. Of the coops we checked that claim 6 or more hens, most have room for 1 to 4 by the 4 sq ft rule.
