Coops that really fit 4 hens

By the Fluff & Feed team · Updated

Hens gathered inside a wooden coop

Four standard hens need about 16 sq ft of coop floor and 40 sq ft of run. Four of the 16 coops we checked meet that by their own measurements.

How we count birds

We divide the listed coop floor by 4 sq ft per bird, and the run by 10 sq ft per bird, and show the smaller number. Bantams need less, while large breeds and birds that rarely free-range need more. When a maker doesn't list floor area, we can't check the claim.

Most prefab coop listings don't say what kind of wire they use. If a page doesn't say hardware cloth, plan on adding it yourself before raccoon season.
